Sin is Serious!!!

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,”–Mark 9:42-47

During my small group this past Tuesday we discussed these verses. It just reminded me (hit me) how serious sin is. It is detrimental if I cause someone to sin. It is serious! Then Jesus proceeds and says if I cause myself to sin, it is also serious. I need to take radical steps to remove my sin so that I will not sin against God. If I do not remove my sin, the text says that I will go to hell.

Am I saying one will lose his salvation? Absolutely not, but I would question their salvation. Jesus said we should be willing to cut off our hand, be willing to cut off our foot, tear out our eye if it causes us to sin. This is serious! This is what Christ is saying! It is indeed worth it! Sin is serious! If I cause others to sin, it would be better if I wrapped a huge rock around my neck and drown than cause a brother to sin. This is essentially what Jesus is saying. Sin is serious!

If you do not take sin seriously, If I do not take sin seriously, we have the right to question one’s salvation. We need to be willing to make radical steps so that we do not sin against our God. I would much rather enter the Kingdom of God with one hand, one foot, and one eye than to burn for the rest of my life. Sin is serious!
